The Illumina Centre is a 155,000 square foot innovative scientific research building in Granta Park, Cambridge. It provides Illumina, a world leader in genomics, which focuses on research to improve human health by unlocking the power of the genome.

A combination of Visqueen products were employed to meet these particular requirements. Visqueen Self Adhesive Membrane (SAM) and Visqueen GeoSeal were selected to provide effective Type A waterproof protection in line with BS8102 throughout the site, with Visqueen Pile Cap Sealer used for waterproofing around piles.

In order to reduce the risk of hydrostatic pressure forming at the side of the structure, Visqueen Protect & Drain was utilised along with a geo composite draining layer and land drains. BioMed Realty Trust, Inc. (NYSE: BMR) today announced that Illumina, Inc. (NASDAQ: ILMN), a world leader in genomics focused on improving human health by unlocking the power of the genome, has signed a 20-year lease for a 155,000 square foot new and innovative scientific research building in Cambridge, England.

Construction of the new building involved a number of challenges. The site had a high risk of water ingress and any solution needed to be UV-stable. It was also essential that the waterproofing could be used both under and over ground in numerous types of applications including ground bearing slabs and retaining walls.

Visqueen Axiom Guard ensured UV stable type A waterproof protection, and it also provided an effective means of bridging the gap between underground and above ground waterproofing.

This state-of-the-art research centre has provided enhanced collaboration opportunities for Illumina’s growing employee base, which is so foundational to their innovation and success. This project has therefore not only helped Illumina to grow, but also to develop its vital research on treatments for people with cancers and rare diseases.
