During the construction of The Library of Birmingham, Birmingham City Council required the correct expertise and knowledge in specifying damp and gas protection solutions, to provide high quality defence and resistance to harmful underground gases.
A number of Visqueen products were used, such as Visqueen’s Gas Proof Membranes, to protect the building from harmful underground gases such as radon, carbon dioxide, methane and hydrocarbons, along with a number of other relevant products for the construction of the new library. Visqueen worked closely with site managers and personnel, providing consultative support throughout the project. This involved providing specialists advice on the correct products and system accessories, supplying accurate CAD details and overseeing the installation of Visqueen products.
In 2013, Visqueen supplied a number of products for the construction of The Library of Birmingham in the city’s Centenary Square. Because the build site was contaminated with harmful underground gases, this posed a key challenge for Carillion, who managed the construction of the library; a specialist protection system was needed to make the development safe for construction. As a leading technical authority in the provision of gas protection systems, Visqueen was called in to provide the relevant protection solutions for the site conditions.
Carillion and the Library of Birmingham were announced as winners of the Project of the Year award on 17 July 2014. Birmingham Library was shortlisted for the Stirling Prize for Architecture.
